The complicated world of fabric
- Cotton
Some seeds are better than other seeds and some soil is better than other soil. However, what usually defines high quality cotton is the wether the fabric is made out of long staple fibre or not. The best cotton in the world usually comes from Egypt.
- Quality
High quality fabric is a combination of several factors such as the cotton plant and the thread count that all contribute to the end result: The thread count has to do with how thin and thus soft a thread is. The higher number, the thinner thread. A thread count of 120 is considered luxurious. It is also worth to mention the thread ply, meaning how many times one thread has been folded. This corresponds to better quality. Standard for luxury shirts is two ply. Weight.
- Poplin
A sharp weave type. Good for formal and light wear. Needs to be ironed or steamed for perfect look. For decent look it needs to be shaken and hang up after wash for - this actually works but we still recommend you to buy something.
The pattern? Does it affect weight?
- Twill
- Dobby
The Weight
The gram per square meter is in general a good indicator of quality. Basically, the lower weight, the better quality and this corresponds directly with the thread count. A high thread count gives a lower weight. However, the weave type also matters since different weave types use different amounts of thread per square meter. For example, Dobby is always heavier than Poplin even if both use the same thread count.
Finally, our fabric is made out of 100% cotton and is carefully selected to give our customers a good ratio between high end fabric and a decent price. For example, our cotton has long fibre staples and comes from Egypt, Turkey and the US, and is woven in Italy and Portugal with generally good thread counts and weight ratios.
